Madison Street Repair
This project aims to repair a section of permeable paver roadway damaged by an animal burrowing into the bank of the Millrace Canal and underneath the roadway. Permeable pavers are placed on top of a layer of washed stone where stormwater runoff is collected and drains downward into the underlying soil. The animal burrow caused some of this stone to shift, which resulted in the overlying permeable pavers to shift too.
The Goshen Water and Sewer Department will remove the impacted permeable pavers and stone layer, fill in the animal burrow, replace the concrete curb, and then replace the stone and permeable pavers. To prevent future animal damage, the bank of the Millrace Canal will be armored with appropriately sized river rock.
The repair work will require the water level in the Millrace Canal to be lowered. The Goshen Parks and Recreation Department, which manages the water level in the Millrace Canal, will begin lowering the water on Friday, November 1st and work is anticipated to begin around Friday, November 8th, as it can take up to five days for the water level to be lowered. The water level will be returned to normal once the work is completed and, weather dependent, will begin being raised no later than Friday, November 22nd.
While the repair work is being completed access to the pedestrian path along the west side of the Millrace Canal via Madison Street will be closed. The pedestrian path can still be accessed at the Jefferson Street Bridge to the north and the Dogulas Street Bridge to the south.
